Lunches were packed, backpacks were filled and parents were scrambling Monday morning as tens of thousands of Houston-area kids headed back to school.

But this year, many local districts have made some changes.

High schools in Brazosport ISD will start classes earlier, while some schools in Fort Bend ISD will start a little later. Classes at Fort Bend elementary schools will begin 10 minutes later than last year, and middle schools will start five minutes later.

In Galveston ISD, elementary schools will start 15 minutes earlier, and high school students will be in classes 30 minutes later than last year. Also in Galveston, historic Central Middle School opens Monday, for the first time since Hurricane Ike.

Sixth-graders at HISD’s Jane Long Middle School will also have a longer day. They’ll have an extra three hours of class. District officials hope the extra time will help the 200 students improve academically.

Spring Branch ISD will open three new elementary schools Monday. The district plans to open 10 other elementaries in the next few years.

In La Marque ISD, only one grade level has to head back to class on Monday – ninth-graders. Everyone else starts on Tuesday.

And one other thing to remember – kids should dress for hot weather and drink plenty of water.

It’s going to be toasty out there.

11 News Meteorologist David Paul said high temps could hit 101 degrees in some parts of the Houston area by Monday afternoon, and a heat advisory is in effect.

In a bid to keep kids cool, officials at Cy-Fair ISD said they’ll be bringing water along on their buses.
