For weeks now, it has been the topic of conversation as well as controversy: Southwest Airlines’ proposal to fly internationally out of Houston’s Hobby Airport. As the list of supporters for Southwest Airlines’ proposal grows, the latest group to support the proposal is the Greater Houston Partnership.
According to published reports, GHP Chairman Tony Chase is in full support of the idea and feels that Houston should have two “vibrant airports and the benefits that go along with it.” Chase cited that the move from Southwest Airlines has the potential to create more jobs for the Houston economy, the measure could also give Houston a “a competitive advantage”.
Just as there is support for the idea there is also opposition. United Airlines has gone on record against the idea stating that expansion out at Hobby Airport could hurt and disrupt activity out at Bush IAH.
The announcement from the Greater Houston Partnership in support for the airport expansion came on the same that that the Houston City Council approved its $360,000 consulting bid for the Houston Airport System.
