Early voting has begun in Texas and federal observers will be in place here in Harris County. This is all tied to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Texas is one of the states that has had challenges when it comes to discrimination during the election process.
Every year the Department of Justice sends hundreds of observers across the country to monitor the election process. They will be looking for anything unusual including voter harassment or intimidation.
In Harris County, there are 1.95 million registered voters.
Harris County Clerk Stan Stanart encourages everyone to take advantage of the convenience of early voting, “It’s critical that people vote early because of redistricting. As a result of the census, your polling location if you wait ’til election day could not be where you expect it to be so if you vote early you can vote anywhere in the county at the 37 locations this week and then Saturday we kick it up 7 to 7.”
