Shepard-Acres Homes Neighborhood Library is being renamed.

The City of Houston and the Houston Public Library are hosting a renaming celebration at the Beulah Shepard-Acres Homes Neighborhood Library to commemorate the official renaming of the library in memory of community leader.

Houston City Council approved the name change in September.

The approved renaming followed Mayor Annise D. Parker proclaiming September 18th, 2012, as Beulah Shepard-Acres Homes Neighborhood Library Day in Houston.

Shepard died on September 11, 2010 after her health declined following a stroke. She was 89.

In her lifetime, she served as a community activist and leader, working with Commissioner E.A. Squatty Lions for 25 years and later with Senator John Whitmire, according to Channel 13.
