Want to shop safe this cyber Monday? Here’s some information from News 92 FM’s Bonnie Petrie:

The number of people shopping online for the holidays this year has surged, and identity thieves are taking note. Katherine Cabaniss of Crime Stoppers says the internet is still kind of like the wild west, and you have to protect yourself. One thing you should not do is click on any link you get in an email.

Type in the address yourself to make sure you’re not being directed to a bogus store-front where someone is waiting to steal your credit card information. Cabaniss says when online shopping, you should also leave your debit card in your wallet. Credit cards transactions are protected at the federal level. Debit card transaction are not.

Also, make sure you’re using a secure connection when you’re buying online, which means you might not want to shop while you’re surfing the net at your favorite coffee shop. Cabaniss suggests you stick to using your home connection.
