La Marque Police are on high alert because there’s a steep rise in air-conditioning unit thefts.

Investigators say thieves are targeting AC units from unoccupied homes and businesses in the La Marque area. So in response, police say they’ve stepped up patrols throughout the city, and are asking residents to keep a watchful eye out for suspicious behavior.

Investigators say a lone thief will typically walk or drive around the area to research air conditioners, then come back with two or three others to rip-off the units.

The stolen units are later dismantled at another location and the lucrative metals inside, copper and aluminum are sold to local area scrap yards.

La Marque Police recommend owners log the make, model and serial number of all components related to their exterior AC units.

Owners are also urged to install metal cages around the units along with lighting to keep them illuminated at night.

If you see anything suspicious, call La Marque Crime Stoppers at 409-938-TIPS.
