As horrific details began to emerge about the brutal devastation that Adam Lanza, 20, inflicted upon 20 young children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary  School in Newtown, Connecticut, one of the most tragic was that the home-grown terrorist carried out his carnage with a semi-automatic rifle and that one of his victims was shot 11 times at close range with bullets designed to expand deep within the body’s tissue to cause the most damage.

That victim was 6-year-old Noah Pozner. And his mother, Veronique Pozner, gave a haunting interview to the Jewish Daily Forward.

She shares that Noah was afraid of death. Since his murder, she has had recurrent dreams about running through an abandoned house covered in brown grass looking for him. She also requested that her son not be autopsied because his body had suffered enough ‘indignities.’

In one of the most painful portions of the interview, she describes his body at the funeral.

The family placed stuffed animals, a blanket and letters to Noah into the casket. Lastly, Veronique put a clear plastic rock with a white angel inside — an “angel stone” — in his right hand. She asked the funeral director to place an identical one in his left, which was badly mangled. Noah’s famously long eyelashes, which she spoke about in her eulogy, rested lightly on his cheeks and a cloth covered the place where his lower jaw had been.

Pozner also shared that sometimes she wonders if her son knew that he was going to die.

Noah also wondered about God, asking his mother, “If God exists then who created God?” He wanted to know what happens after death. “I would always tell him, ‘You are not going to die until you are a very old man, Noah.’ He was afraid of death, I know he was. He feared the unknown,” Veronique says. “Sometimes I wonder whether he had some foretelling, some prescience about it. Of course I will never know for sure, maybe it was just the random fears of a child.”
