No Cover Letter
- Although cover letters may seem outdated, omitting one could be the reason why your resume is not being seen. Take the time to re-read the job description, research the company and what you can offer them, and write out a cover letter that best explains how your skills and experience would apply to the job. Try not to repeat what’s on your resume too much. The employer is well aware that a resume is included, so they will refer to it for that information. A cover letter gives you the chance to customize your personal pitch and show a bit of your personality.
Including Work Experience Not Tailored To The Job You Want
- Your resume should highlight the experience and attributes that will be best suited to the job you’re applying for. If it’s a job focused heavily on tech know-how, showcasing your education and experience in computers should be top-of-mind. If it’s a job where working with people will take up most of your day, that highlighting jobs where you interacted heavily with clients and colleagues is important. Your resume should show how qualified you are!
