Lester Chambers, a member of The Chambers Brothers soul-rock group, was attacked during a tribute to Trayvon Martin Saturday evening before a Florida jury announced its verdict.

The 73-year-old artist was performing at the Hayward Russell City Blues Festival in Hayward, Calif., according to FUSE, when Dinalynn Andrews Potter, 43, leaped onstage and attacked him. Chambers sustained a bruised rib and nerve damage, according to his son Dylan who posted the above photo to Facebook.

Potter was arrested on suspicious of battery, but was released. Chambers’ family is seeking hate crime charges in the attack, Billboard reports.

According to Chambers’ wife, Lola, the singer was attacked shortly after beginning his rendition of Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions’ “People Get Ready,” which he dedicated to Martin, 17, who was killed in February 2012 during a fight with acquitted neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman.

Chambers spoke with FUSE later, and he says the police did not even book her and charged her with a misdemeanor offense! Listen to him in this exclusive interview below:
