HOUSTON, TX – Radio One Inc., KMJQ Majic 102.1’s Kandi “The Sweet Talker” Eastman announced today that she has breast cancer. Kandi, who has shared the workday with Houston radio listeners for over 19 years, unveils the life-changing news on the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The announcement came with a studio filled with family, friends, and well-wishers, including calls from Cathy Hughes, Tom Joyner, Sybil Wilkes, Jay Anthony Brown, Yolanda Adams, Robin Roberts, Raheem DeVaughn, Karen Jackson, Founder of Sister’s Network, and Congress-woman Shelia Jackson-Lee.
One of Kandi’s most recognizable daily show features is “Kandi’s Quotable” where she imparts quotes from famous authors, poets, and celebrities. Today she quoted author and poet Dr. Maya Angelou, “Today, I come as one, but I stand for 10,000 Breast Cancer survivors, encouraging our sisters to be encouraged. So, let’s make history together! Schedule your mammogram today; keep your appointment if you already have one. And tomorrow, I’ve already claimed it – this cancer will be history.”
“Only Kandi Eastman would be strong enough to share her personal health issue. The sharing of her cancer diagnosis will prayerfully inspire others to realize the importance of early detection and screening. The Radio One family has huddled around her, and we look forward to her radio family joining us in prayers for her and her family,” says General Manager and Vice President Doug Abernethy.
“Kandi is the “First Lady” of Majic 102.1 and over the past 19 years has been a shining star of strength for our staff and community. It is our time to give back to Kandi and be strong for her as she recovers. Kandi is a fighter, and we will fight with her,” says Operations Manager, Terri Thomas.
Those who wish to support breast cancer awareness can purchase a limited-edition “The Only Kandi, Mom wants you to have” t-shirt for $20 each while supplies last, proceeds benefit Sisters Network, a national African American breast cancer survivorship organization.
KMJQ’s annual “Majic under the Stars” concert on October 26th will be a party with a purpose encouraging everyone to wear pink and celebrate survivors.
Eastman closed her announcement by saying: “I want to thank my husband, my sons, my mother, my family, my extended family and friends, let’s remain powerful in our prayers, as we support our cancer survivors by wearing pink. I will win this battle.”
The Eastman family requests privacy as Kandi takes a leave to begin treatment.
