(HOUSTON) — Opponents of Houston’s Equal Rights Ordinance have just a few more days to collect enough signatures to repeal the ordinance. Meantime, supporters are gearing up for a fight to keep the ordinance in place.

NEWS 92 FM’s Adela Uchida reports:

Opponents of the Equal Rights Ordinance have until Thursday to get just under 17,000 signatures, says Houston Area Pastor Council executive director Dave Welch.

“We believe we’re well on track to get that minimum and we’re pleased with the response from the community,” Welch said.

Opponents object to the part of the ordinance that would allow transgender women to use the women’s bathroom, says Jonathan Saenz of Texas Values.

“They want men that dress up as women to use the women’s bathroom whenever they decide to,” Saenz said. “That’s what they consider freedom.”

Not true, says supporter Lou Weaver.

“I am a 5-foot, 7-inch guy with a goatee and a deep voice,” Weaver said. “They don’t think like guys like me using the restroom. They’re focusing on a man in a wig. They’re focusing on making people afraid.”

Weaver is a transgender man who says he hasn’t used a women’s restroom since he was 18.

“We need to stop talking about restrooms and start talking about people being safe and people having jobs,” he said.
