(HOUSTON) — A local man is competing in the IRONMAN competition to help his dad who is suffering from a rare blood cancer.

Patrick Devlin is helping to raise money for research for his father, Gary, who is diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.

So far, he’s raised over $21,000 and his team has raised over $600,000. Devlin is competing despite being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, which he says creates an extra level of stress on an already tasking 14-hour event.

It may be both mentally and physically draining, but he and his dad call it a welcome distraction.

The IRONMAN competition will take place on July 27 in Lake Placid.
