(HOUSTON) — The deadline is near to pre-register for the 2014 Mayor’s Back to School Fest.

The goal is to make sure low-income kids have everything they need for the first day of school, so they’re ready to learn.

The Latest News Headlines, Traffic and Weather:

“The challenge for a lot of kids across our community is they start the first day of school, they have that list of supplies that they’re supposed to have, their parents don’t have the money, they don’t have the access to those supplies, and they start behind,” Houston Mayor Annise Parker said. “Every day they don’t have what they need for school, they get farther and farther behind.”

Parker said kids will receive backpacks and school supplies, but that’s not the half of it. They’ll also have vision and dental screenings, vaccinations, hair cut vouchers, and brand new socks and underwear. If they’re eligible, attendees can also be signed up for food stamps.

The deadline to pre-register for this free event is Friday. You must pre-register in order to attend. You can do so at MayorsBacktoSchoolFestHouston.org, or by calling 832-393-0939.

The 2014 Mayor’s Back to School Fest will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, at the University of Houston.
