After the shooting death of 18-year old, unarmed Mike Brown in Ferguson, Mo. last week, and the frequency of civilian camera phone videos, the question has been raised as to whether or not police officers should wear on-body cameras. Police departments everywhere have been considering the option and even the Houston and Austin Police Departments have started pilot programs. The camera attaches to the officer’s shirt, hat or can be placed in a shirt pocket. The cost of these cameras is about $600 which is a sizable investment for larger departments, not including the cost of online storage for the footage.

Privacy issues, the lack of national guidelines, and the effectiveness of the camera’s use are issues law enforcement departments are considering. One thing is certain is that the cameras will offer accountability for the public and police actions. Click here to read more.
