The answer to the long running question as to what should be done with the Houston Astrodome may finally have an answer. Judge Ed Emmet has proposed to turn the venue into an innovative, year-round venue for exercise, education, family gatherings and community events. Nicknamed the “Eighth Wonder of the World”, in 1965 it became the world’s first air-conditioned domed stadium and was once home to the Houston Oilers and the Houston Astros. With the construction of new venues for Houston’s professional ports teams, the dome has become outdated. Its main use now has been for events during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The idea of tearing down the Houston landmark has been opposed by many but as long as it stands, it costs taxpayers money . Back in 2013 voters opposed a referendum to turn the dome into an events center. The final decision is up to the Commissioner’s Court, a group of of officials who manage Harris County. Click here to see more of Judge Ed Emmet’s proposal.
