(HOUSTON)– Are you behind on your credit card payments? Don’t have a savings? Do your dreams of owning your own home seem impossible? Good!  The Debt Boot Camp wants you.

This is the third year Windsor Village United Methodist Church has partnered with Capital One Bank to help Houstonians get out of debt free of charge.

Tandelyn Weaver with Windsor Village UMC said the entire community benefits with each person who manages to climb out of debt.

“If you’re able to buy a home that’s a positive impact; if you increase your savings it has a multiplying effect on the economy,” Weaver said.

During the sessions, participants get one-on-one advice from experts like Money Management International, and can even qualify for matching down payment fund from Covenant Community Capital’s Individual Development Account.  Texas Southern University’s Earl Carl Institute will offer legal support.

While the camp is free, organizers say what is necessary is commitment.  The program lasts for nine months, and sessions are held for a couple of hours on the first Saturday of each month.

But the pay-off is substantial.

According to Weaver, last year’s class of 141 participants collectively reduced their debt by $70,000, increased their savings by $50,000 and on average improved their credit scores by 30 points.

“Huge, that’s huge! You’re now eligible for some things that you weren’t eligible for if your credit score was too low,” she explained.

Debt boot camp starts Sat., October 4, 2014 at 9 a.m., at the Kingdom Builders’ Center, 6011 West Orem, Houston, TX 77085.  For more information call 713-726-2519 or go to www.kingdombuilders.com.
