Native Houstonian, Baylor University great and now WNBA star, Brittney Griner was randomly attacked, along with two of her teammates in China. This is the WNBA’s off-season where most players play in Europe. Griner is in her first year as the starting center for the Zhejiang Golden Bulls. A man who appeared to be mentally ill, or possibly drunk appeared as the players were walking out of a practice facility to the team bus. The assailant chased them onto the bus and cornered for a few minutes as he wielded a knife and stabbed at Griner and her teammates. The man then voluntarily left the bus but was later arrested by Chinese authorities. The attack was deemed random and not personally driven. None of the players were seriously injured but Griner did sustain a small cut on her elbow that did not require stitches. She even played in the game later that evening.

Griner, who is 6’8”, helped the Phoenix Mercury win this season’s WNBA Championship and was the 2014 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. Click here to read more.
