PORT ARTHUR, Texas—Authorities say multiple people were injured but no one was killed in a mass pileup involving as many as 40 vehicles on a highway near Port Arthur early Thursday.

Bellefonte, Pennsylvania (CNN) — Former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky, who is accused of sexually abusing boys, remains “totally prepared and committed to proving his innocence” after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday, his attorney said.

“We’re ready to defend. We’ve always been ready to defend,” attorney Joe Amendola told reporters outside the Centre County Courthouse after the brief court hearing. “Today’s waiver has nothing to do with conceding anything. There have been no plea negotiations. There will be no plea negotiations. This is a fight to the death. This is the fight of Jerry Sandusky’s life.”

(BLACKSBURG, Va.) – Two people, including a police officer, are dead after a shooting on the campus of Virginia Tech, and students are being urged to remain indoors as officials search for the gunman.

“Shortly after 12 p.m. today, a Virginia Tech Police officer stoped [sic] a vehicle on campus during a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall,” campus spokesman Mark Owczarski said in a statement Thursday. It was during that traffic stop that the police officer was shot and killed, Owczarski said.

Today Dr. Conrad Murray was sentenced to 4 years in prison in the Los Angeles County Jail on  involuntary manslaughter charges related to the death of singer Michael Jackson.

The court denied the request for probation deeming him unsuitable and disqualified because he “abandoned his patient, administered dangerous drugs, repeatedly lied, engaged in deceitful conduct and violated the trust of the medical community, along with no sense of remorse of fault” stated the judge.

The judge stated that the court does not have the legal authority to send Dr. Murray to state prison.
