Last night on TV One’s “Unsung,” fans of hip hop/R&B group Full Force learned that Paul Anthony George is battling lymphoma.  Paul is the most herculean member of the buffed band of brothers and cousins who recorded hits like “Alice Be My Girl,” “Please Stay” and “Let’s Dance Against The World.”  They also had memorable roles in the movies House Party, House 2 and Krush Groove, among others.

Paul Anthony explains how he found out:

“I was in the gym training and my training partner saw a small lump. He said, you need to go and get that checked out.  I didn’t feel nothing, but with that type you don’t feel anything.   I went and had a FNA (a fine needle aspiration) where they inject and pull the fluid out, and the diagnosis was that it seemed to be consistent with mantle cell lymphoma.”

The biopsy was conclusive and to date the disease is incurable.

Out of this experience has grown a family quest for the right plan of attack, which included canvassing cancer treatment centers and interviewing world renowned physicians. Making the right choice for Paul Anthony came easy, because it all boiled down to a name. Somewhere out there was a Dr. Paul Anthony Hamlin and when the two Paul Anthony’s met, the irony served as a confirmation. Full Force’s Paul Anthony comments on the coincidence:

“He said, I’ve never met another Paul Anthony and the doctor said, neither have I.  So I said, ‘All my life, I’ve bet on Paul Anthony, so I’m going to bet on Paul Anthony.’”

Six months of intense chemotherapy followed for an undaunted Paul, who maintained his fitness regimen despite the treatments. Anthony stresses that most diseases are individual, therefore implementing healthy lifestyle choices, mental focus and spirituality are what is most important in combating illness and maintaining health. Paul Anthony is currently in remission although, his brother Bow Legged Lou is a direct match for him should there be a need for a blood donor. The success rate for such an operation is now 98-99%.

True to the Full Force persona that we know, Paul Anthony is living life and not missing a beat.  He also never paused to wonder why this diagnosis has come upon him.

“I never asked myself ‘why me’?  I was too preoccupied with ‘let’s dance, let’s do this’. The only thought is let me take care of this, let me dance with this, let me get control of this because I’ve got things to do!”

Paul Anthony decided to go public with his fight so that it might encourage others, especially those who are entertainers, to be vocal about their predicament in the hope that they can help and inspire others. Be on the lookout for concerts, fundraisers and various events as part of the Paul Anthony Foundation and its mission to find a cure for lymphoma and other diseases.

 According to the AP, Camilla Williams, believed to be the first African-American woman to appear with a major U.S. opera company, has died. She was 92.

Jennifer Hudson is back with a new single, “Think Like A Man” which also features R&B crooner Ne-Yo and Maybach Music rapper Rick Ross.

“Think Like A Man” is the lead single off of the film adaptation of Steve Harvey’s book, “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man” movie soundtrack. The powerhouse belts out sassy lyrics and sings with an emotional hook that is so catchy, you will be singing this around the offices at work and even in your car!

Rick Ross’ verse provides a great balance to the record keeping it R&B with a little edge. The beat is hard and makes for a great “two step” while his narration doesn’t last too long, and sets you up for JHud to come back in.

In the world of R&B, love songs are a staple. But let’s face it: A lot of the time, they’re a little sappy and corny, even if they’re beautiful.

Classic songs like Luther Vandross’ “Here and Now” and Heatwave’s “Always and Forever” are yes, gorgeous wedding songs and all that, but what about those that are more about the experience than the emotion, a little more raw than romantic? They make the most lasting impressions – especially the ones made by those of the male species.

So many men say they don’t know how to express themselves; well, these men did on the following tracks – and exposed a few man codes in the process.

Indeed, from the countless recorded songs in which to choose, it was a struggle to narrow down to five, but here they are: The five most honest love songs men have ever made.

TANK, “MAYBE I DESERVE” (2001)

Tank’s classic tale of a cheating man trying to get right is still number one on our list of honesty songs. Here’s a man who knows he’s wrong and is willing to admit it to the world. Here’s a man who details the pain of watching his woman cheat on him while he questions her about who’s she’s going out with and who’s calling her, all the while knowing that he’s done the same thing to her in the past. Here’s a man who says “I know I deserve this, but it still hurts.”

“Maybe I Deserve” is such a classic because there will always be a man who feels this way, and fortunately for them, this will always be the song that helps with the heartbreak. Tank really gives up some man code here, admitting that while men may satisfy their selfish desires with other women, when the tables are turned, they hurt too. Six million YouTube views say Tank’s song helped ease some pain.

DONNELL JONES, “WHERE I WANNA BE” (1999)

Donnell Jones is number two on this list, but only because he realized his wrong before he actually cheated on his woman. In this song, Jones admits that he needs a little time and space to figure out who he really wants to be with. Yes, he loves his girl, but he’s just got this lust in his heart for other women, so instead of hurting someone, he decides he needs to figure it out by himself.

You have to give this brother props for realizing his struggle and not inflicting it on some poor woman – but on the other hand, that woman he’s talking about probably wasn’t too happy when he told her how he was really feeling. “I’d rather leave than cheat.” Got to respect a man with values like that. Hopefully, in due time, homegirl realized that with his honesty, he was doing her a huge favor.

CEE-LO, “FORGET YOU” (2010)

We love Cee-Lo, if only because he also wrote the song “Crazy” with Gnarls Barkley, the official theme song to many a dysfunctional relationship, and he appeared in a video where a breakup resulted in a heart literally being torn out of a chest and placed on a plate. We think this man knows breakups.

Jimmy Castor, a New York funk and soul saxophonist, singer and songwriter whose tune, “It’s Just Begun,” morphed over 40 years into an anthem for generations of hip-hoppers and mainstream musical acts, died of apparent heart failure in a Las Vegas hospital, family members said Tuesday. He was 71.

Castor’s music, including another 1972 hit, “Troglodyte,” spoke for itself thousands of times in riffs and samples by groups like N.W.A., the 2 Live Crew, Kanye West, Ice Cube and Mos Def, as well as acts such as the Spice Girls, Christina Aguilera and Madonna.

His son, Jimmy Castor Jr., 45, a filmmaker from Redondo Beach, Calif., told The Associated Press he’s seen instant recognition hundreds of times at the first sax chords of “It’s Just Begun” — even before the lyrics begin. (“Watch me now. Feel the groove. Into something. Gonna make you move.”)

“No matter what country you’re in, no matter what language you speak, everyone knows it,” Jimmy Castor Jr. said in Las Vegas.

Jimmy Castor was hospitalized in November after suffering a heart attack, and underwent quadruple bypass surgery. He died Monday at Saint Rose Dominican Hospital, his son said.

Castor, head of the musical group the Jimmy Castor Bunch, lived with his wife, Sandi, in suburban Henderson near Las Vegas.

His work was sampled by other artists more than 3,000 times, his son said, and he continued to work and perform until last August, when he played at the Long Beach Funk Festival in California. Jimmy Castor Jr. said his father had booked dates for a European tour this year.

According to the AP, newly engaged queen of soul Aretha Franklin is headlining this summer’s Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, and its other top performers include Mary J. Blige, Fantasia, Stephanie Mills, Charlie Wilson and Keyshia Cole.
