Mom’s are intricate, and influential beings in their children’s lives. Moms help to mold their children into productive, functioning people of society. They are loving, providing, beings who we depend on for survival throughout the entirety of our lives.

In the traditional sense they comb hair, soothe and appease aches and sickness, make the best meals, are first to wish us a happy birthday, who we call first in an emergency, who put our good grades on the fridge, put our name in our backpack and lunch kit in case we lose it, make our doctor’s appointments, buy our favorite snacks, and make our lunches to list a few.

They are teachers who lead by example. Their affection, support and encouragement help us along the way. They are one of the single most important people we know and who we always can turn to.

In the non-traditional sense some of us have been fortunate to find special gems, women who we are so close to that we consider them our second mother. These women may be mentors, god mothers, neighbors, church ladies, those women who though you were not born of them, take care of you like you were one of their own.

I am most fortunate to have special women like that in my life who have left a permanent imprint on me. Their impactful tutelage has lent to my spiritual, professional, and overall development and growth. For all the great things my own mom has imparted on me, there’s still a limit to what she knows, and those women have inadvertently supplemented that.

As children or spouses of moms, there probably is not much we can really do to ever repay her for her life-long commitment of service to us. With the busyness and hustle and bustle of our lives we easily neglect and forget to share our appreciation for her. We forget to hug and kiss her, we forget to say thank you, we forget to say Mama, I love you.

So, this Sunday, May 12, is more than Mother’s Day, it is the perfect opportunity to do something nice and thoughtful for the mother or mother(s) in your life. After all, she’s done it everyday for you, she certainly deserves one day at the least!

Based on a survey of mothers in our Radio One Houston office, I have compiled a list of things mommy’s really want for Mother’s Day. So, lets skip the flowers that die in three days and the Hallmark card you forgot to write your own message in. Try one of  our ideas.
