Tom Joyner “The Fly Jock”

In 2005, a nationally syndicated television show, The Tom Joyner Show, was launched with Joyner as emcee of a one-hour comedy/variety show, combining sketch comedy featuring the Tom Joyner Show Players (his co-hosts from the radio show), talent contests, and musical performances by such artists as Earth, Wind and FireBrian McKnightKenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Toni Braxton. The show attracted advertisers such as McDonaldsChrysler CorporationWalMart and Southwest Airlines.

While the program achieved top ratings for a weekly syndicated program themed to African American viewers –even taking the number one show position although it was in a late night time slot– in such markets as New York and Atlanta, affiliates in other markets were reluctant to upgrade the show to prime time for a targeted audience.[citation needed] Without the opportunity to reach a larger audience in earlier time slots and achieve greater revenues, the show had limited ability to offset the residuals and music clearances required by the many performers appearing on the show. Despite award recognition, in May 2006, Joyner decided not to continue due to production costs related to the music variety show concept.[citation needed] Re-runs are shown on TV One cable channel.

Jeff Harrison “The Majic Man”

Jeff Harrison is the Program Director and Afternoon Drive Air Personality for Majic 102.1.
Jeff began his career in San Bernardino, California as an announcer for the local college station KVCR.  After two years, Jeff parlayed this experience into an announcer job in Flint, Michigan at WAMM-FM.  During his tenure there, Jeff won Billboard Magazine’s Air Personality of the Year Award.
After leaving Flint, Michigan, Jeff worked as an announcer at WHAT Radio in Philadelphia, and later WJPC Radio in Chicago.  Five years later, Jeff left Chicago to work mornings at KDIA in San Francisco, where he also served as Program Director.
Jeff worked in San Francisco for nine years, where under his direction as Program Director, KDIA achieved its highest Arbitron ratings ever.  While also in California, Jeff spent two years at KBLX/KRE Radio in Berkley.  There he also enjoyed ratings success as Program Director and Afternoon Air Personality.
Jeff later joined KMJQ-FM/Majic 102.1 in Houston, Texas, where he stayed for six successful years.  As the Afternoon Drive Personality, Jeff consistently earned top ratings within the station’s Adult 25-54 demographic target, ranking #1 and #2 in the Arbitron ratings during that six-year period.
Jeff then left Houston to join the staff of “The Wave”, KTWV, 93.3-FM in San Francisco as the Music Director and Morning Air Personality – where he stayed for nearly two years.

Missing Houston, Jeff rejoined the staff at KMJQ-FM/Majic 102.1 in 2003.  Jeff feels the success of any radio station is due, in large part, to being in touch with the “pulse” of the community, creating an on-air format that is stimulating, and has enormous mass appeal.  He attributes his success to being in tune with the needs and desires of the station’s listeners.

Tony Woods

Tony is no stranger to the Houston airwaves. He first arrived here in the mid 90′s to do afternoons at what was then known as 102 jamz. After 102 jamz switched to Majic 102.1 Tony set off to Milwaukee where he was the #1 Night time DJ in the city.

It would not be long before he returned to Houston. In 2000 a brand new station started up in Houston, 98.5 The Jam. Tony was tapped for afternoons for the station, and the station was welcomed with overwhelming amount of listeners. Unfortunately again Tony was caught up in a format change when the
station flipped to tejano music. Tony commented, “I barely can speak english, and other than “Taco Cabana” I speak know spanish, So I kind of knew that was the end of that”. Tony stayed in Houston however working for both 97.9 and Majic 102.1, “Now that was fun, I don’t believe they allow dj’s to do that anymore around here”

In 2004 Tony was off to Georgia to work for a good friend, former KMJQ PD Carl Conner. “Him and I go back a lot of years, a good friend. He asked so I went to help him out.” After a couple of years of being a long distance dad, Tony wanted to get back close to Sylvia his 9 year old daughter, so he accepted mornings at Q95.5 in Lafayette LA. “That was my last go around with hip hop radio, I hear things differently as a parent, some of them can make you uncomfortable riding along with your daughter, especially mine, she ask questions that will make you pull over so you wont wreck”.

Then last year a phone call to PD Jeff Harrison, whom Tony had worked with some eleven years ago led to his return to Houston and Majic 102.1. “I was born in Ohio, but Houston is clearly my home now. I am so happy to be back here, working for a station that I’m familiar with the staff, my boss is my friend, and my daughter can listen to the station. Life & God is good”

You can hear Tony throughout the week, & hosting Club Majic Friday nights, and Classic Sundays, Sunday Afternoon.
