HOUSTON – HISD is trying to entice kids to come to class at some of the district’s under-performing schools by offering them a chance to win prizes.

The district is holding drawings for sports tickets, gift cards and MP3 players in a bid to get kids to participate in HISD’s new Apollo 20 project.

Each time a student shows up for class, they get a chance to win the prizes.

“We know that the more we can get them into the classroom, the better chance they have at succeeding and achieving,” Lee Velan, HISD’s General Manager of Student Incentives, said.

The district said the prizes are not being funded by taxpayer dollars, but are being purchased with HISD foundation funds and private donations.
