HOUSTON — A mural of President Barack Obama in Midtown has been defaced, KPRC Local 2 reported Sunday.

The mural was painted last year when the building on West Alabama Street near Travis Street housed then-candidate Obama’s campaign headquarters.

Someone scrawled the word “puppet” near the president’s face, and on a sign that reads “Obama ‘08 Yes We Can,” someone wrote “lose our freedom.”

The owner of the Breakfast Klub restaurant across the street said the mural has become an important part of the community.

“Actually, I was heartbroken, I was hurt,” Marcus Davis said. “It’s just a building, just a painting, but it didn’t set well with me.”

It appears the mural was defaced sometime late Saturday or early Sunday.
