Wilmington, North Carolina native Alex Manly served as editor of a newspaper called The Daily Record, which was, at one point, the only African-American newspaper in the late 19th century. Once Manly took over the weekly edition of The Daily Record, he expanded its printing to daily. A fair-skinned black man, Manly signed on white advertisers to the newspaper.
