Legendary vocalist, actor, musician, producer and songwriter Prince (born Prince Rogers Nelson) turns 54 today so let the party begin and the good times roll!

BLACK MUSIC MOMENT: Prince Records His First Album, “For You.”

Effortlessly blending unique elements of R&B, funk, jazz, soul, rock, blues, New Wave and even Hip Hop, Prince can do it all. He’s a musical and instrumental pioneer having launched the “Minneapolis sound” and being influenced by everyone from the late James Brown, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix on down to Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder and Sly & The Family Stone. His own impact on the industry has sparked and encouraged the musical prowess of today’s top artists like Lenny Kravitz, Raheem DeVaughn and Van Hunt just to name a few.

Having reportedly written more than one thousand songs (both released and unreleased), Prince has won a total of seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for his profound body of work. He has repeatedly made the list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame back in 2004, the very first year he was eligible.
