As you may recall, in 1991, Rodney King suffered skull fractures and brain and kidney damage from a beating by Los Angeles police officers after a traffic stop. The acquittal of 3 officers involved in the beating led to riots that took 55 lives and caused a $1 billion in property damages. After a civil suit, king received a $3.8 million damage award from the city. Since that time, he has experienced substance abuse problems and has had one run-in with the law after another.
