Balladeers are usually best known for their smooth, sultry vocals, and singer Kem is no exception to that rule. But for the past two years, Kem has also been the host of a very special event in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan.

“Mack and Third” is a free concert and all-day fair in Detroit’s Cass Park that is also a food drive to help the homeless population of Detroit. The price of admission is a canned good. It takes place this year on Sunday, Aug. 28, beginning at 1 p.m., and includes free health screenings and more.

Kem, once himself homeless on the streets of his native city, wanted to give back to the organizations that helped him when he was down.

“’Mack and Third’ is about giving back,” KEM said in a statement. “I’ve been fortunate to overcome many obstacles, including being addicted and homeless. If it weren’t for organizations like the Detroit Rescue Mission and NSO (Neighborhood Service Organization), I wouldn’t be where I am today. I want to encourage others in their current situations by offering something tangible like a meal, along with the hope that things can get better. By sharing my music with a free concert, I also hope to inspire others to give back.”

If you can’t make it out to the event or if you want to give more to help the homeless in Detroit, Kem is offering prizes to everyone who donates $5 or more to the Mack and Third charity. The grand prize is a two-year lease on a Chevy vehicle. Other prizes include Kem merchandise, gas cards and gift cares.

Donations to Mack & Third can be made via PayPal online (at www.mackandthird.org); by mail (to Mack & Third, P.O. Box 441245, Detroit, MI 48244) or in person on the day of the event until 5:30 p.m. All online and mailed donations must be received by Friday, Aug. 26 to be eligible for all prize drawings.

This year, Kem adds the iconic R&B band The Time to the lineup.

The Time, formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota was a creative vehicle for Prince, who crafted much of its early projects. The band appeared as his rivals in his Oscar-winning film 1984 film, “Purple Rain.” Lead singer Morris Day was the band’s frontman, while hitmakers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and guitarist-turned-solo artist Jesse Johnson all got their start in The Time. Their self-titled debut is among the classics of the Minneapolis sound.
