A new technique for treating breast cancer being tested in Britain is showing success and could make surgery a thing of the past.

NEWS 92 FM’s Norm Uhl reports with the details:

The technique destroys tumors by freezing them. A supercooled needle tip is repeatedly inserted into the cancerous tissue turning the tumor it into a ball of ice which reportedly destroys the cancer cells.

The procedure does not require anesthetic, and can be completed in about 15 minutes, according to the Daily Mail newspaper in London.

The needle is cooled to minus 274 degrees by pumping liquid nitrogen through a network of tiny tubes. The surgeon can control the size of the ice ball to ensure it freezes the entire tumour.

Scientists from the Israel-based company Icecure Medical, which developed the device, say it could be used on cancerous masses up to the size of a golf ball.

The device has already been approved for use in the United States and Icecure is hopeful of getting European approval next year. Scientists believe the procedure could also be used to treat kidney, prostate and liver cancer.
