Like a fortress, the home of the top prep basketball team in America is surrounded by an ominous black fence.

To enter — or exit — Jack Yates High School in the Third Ward of Houston, one must first walk around and find an opening. Like the boys basketball team’s trapping defense, however, the fence is difficult to penetrate unless someone leaves it open for you.

The Yates basketball team has won 45 straight games, is the defending Class 4A state champion and is ranked No. 1 nationally by Max Preps and Rivals.com. But the team also has received national attention for its lopsided margins of victory, including a 170-35 win over Lee High School earlier this year.
