(HOUSTON) — One man who lives in The Heights got so fed up with a pothole near his house that he decided to take matters into his own hands.

Neighbors are praising 69-year-old George Silva. Residents on Darling Street say they called 311 to report a several-inches-deep pothole for weeks, to no avail.

The Latest News Headlines, Traffic and Weather:

Tired of constantly dodging the pothole, Silva did something about it — he grabbed some tools and filled in the pothole with dirt.

He told our news partner, KHOU 11, that he felt compelled to take action. Neighbors said it shouldn’t have come to that.

The Houston Public Works Department said it’s over-burdened and under-staffed, slowing the response for repairing the potholes.

Still, public works officials said that doing what Silva did could ultimately make the pothole problem worse.
