(MISSOURI CITY, TX) – An officer with the Missouri City Police Department underwent surgery after going over a bridge during a traffic stop.

Ofc. Kenneth Lewis has been with the department for three months. Lt. Paul Poulton tells our news partner, KHOU 11, that a driver not involved in the stop plowed into the back of his patrol car on Highway 6 over Flat Bank Creek.

Lewis was alert and talking as he was being airlifted.

The driver Lewis pulled over was taken to a hospital by ground ambulance.

The woman who plowed into the back of Lewis’ patrol car, causing the chain-reaction incident, was confirmed to be a Fort Bend ISD teacher.

“The employee has been with the District since August 1, 2000 and is a P.E. teacher at Scanlan Oaks Elementary,” FBISD released in a statement.

Poulton said alcohol may have been a factor. This case remains under investigation.
