In a new and interesting move, Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce announced that her office will be investigating the death of Mansur Ball-Bay, 18,  a teen who was shot in the back by police officers in St. Louis last week, The Root reports.

The move to conduct their own investigation is surprising as most of the time, the office awaits the results of the police investigation before probing their own investigation. This may be the result of the medical examination report which shows that Ball-Bay was shot in the back, the bullet going to his heart – but this finding may not be in line with the police report’s version of events.

St. Louis, which has been the site of many protests since the death of Mike Brown in August 2014, and indeed the commemoration of the 1 year anniversary of his death, saw more protests in the city. In the wake of Ball-Bay’s death, whom the police accuse of pointing a gun at police officers – a claim met with skepticism by his family – the city once again saw an increasing number of protests again.

The result of this investigation will be watched closely.
