Dear Tom,

This Christmas Wish is for our 75 year-old mother and widow, Beulah Waker.  Our father passed away on December 2, 2014 and our brother died unexpectedly on February 16, 2015.  These two men were our mother’s all in all and the majority of her income.   Last week, my mother was away from her Ninth Ward home of nearly 60 years when my sisters and I received a call saying one of her side windows was opened.  Once inside her home, we were horrified at the devastation.  The house looked like Hurricane Katrina without the water.

Thieves had ransacked the house completely and took everything but the kitchen sink.  They had boldly stolen her TVS, two refrigerators, a stove, a freezer, curio cabinet and her pride and joy, a red-washing machine, the last gift she received from her late son, Jeffrey and the matching dryer.  They also took, her bedding, pots and pans and even the salt and pepper shakers. The list of items taken from our mother goes on and on, including personal things that can’t be replaced from her deceased husband, who was the love of her life.

We are doing what we can, as her three daughters, to support our mother through another difficult time in her life.  She has always had a positive attitude, but her heart is completely broken over losing so much within the last eight months.    She lives on a fixed income and does not have homeowners insurance, so everything stolen will need to be replenished, which is beyond what our family can handle.
