Sananda Maitreya, also formerly known as Terence Trent D’Arby’ has always rebelled against the norm and taken a strong stance on his love for music.

After remaining a low profile over the years, Maitreya has now returned with a brand new album called “The Rise of the Zugebrian Time Lords.” In an exclusive Yahoo interview, Maitreya breaks down his current state of music, going independent, and his take on politics of the industry.

In regards to making commercial success and making music from the heart, Maitreya says “If there is anything that I regret, it is that I didn’t raise even more hell.”

Maitreya also talks about how liberating his name change was and his move to Italy. “What was most enlightening about changing my name was that you can change your name to anything you want BUT you cannot change your Social Security number! Which goes to show what matter most to the system,” he says.

On the music industry, Maitreya elaborated on how he felt caught in a very unfortunate political situation, which made it necessary for him to be “mummified.”

“It was politically convenient for me to be entombed. I had lost complete control of that life and too many people had become involved in what it was. It was no longer about me and my vision but about what was best for other bitches.”
