The White House Council on Women and Girls recently held a summit at Wake Forrest University entitled “Advancing Equity for Women & Girls of Color: A Research Agenda for the Next Decade” Attendees discussed ways to vastly improve the lives of women and girls of color.

The Obama Administration will contribute  $118 million in public-private funds to the advancement of the council’s efforts.

According to Clutch Magazine, “The White House Council on Women and Girls has identified five issue areas where interventions can promote opportunities for success, including; fostering school success and reducing unnecessary exclusionary school discipline, meeting the needs of vulnerable striving youth; inclusive stem education; sustaining reduced rates for teen pregnancy; and aiding in economic prosperity.”

Chair of the Council, Valerie Jarrett, shared the importance of equipping young women with the necessary tools to succeed.

“When women of color aren’t given the opportunity to live up to their God given potential, we lose out on their talents. We’re not as good a country as we can be” she began.

“We might miss out on the next May Jemison or Ursula Burns or Serena Williams or Michelle Obama. We want everyone to be on the field. We can’t afford to leave some folks off the field.”
