grand jury has brought an indictment against two Louisiana police officers who fatally shot a six-year-old boy after opening fire into his father’s car.
According to TIME, Marksville City Marshals Norris Greenhouse Jr., 23, and Lt. Derrick Stafford, 32, were indicted Thursday on second-degree murder charges for the death of Jeremy Mardis and attempted second-degree murder charges for shooting his father, Christopher Few.
The November shooting occurred during a pursuit of Few’s vehicle. The officers claim Few backed his truck into a police squad car, prompting them to open fire. Few was unarmed with his hands up when five bullets hit his autistic son; Few was also wounded. Investigators believe the incident stemmed from a deeper quarrel between Few and Greenhouse, who had a previous encounter.
Two other officers – who were at the scene but didn’t fire their weapons – have been cleared of any wrongdoing.
Disturbing footage captured by the body camera of police Sgt. Kenneth Parnell was viewed by State Police Col. Michael Edmonson, but has not been released to the public.
Jeremy’s grandmother, Cathy Mardis, wants the 13-minute video made available.
The Acadiana Advocate reports:
“There may be some graphic, disturbing images but I think it needs to be seen,” she said.
Cathy Mardis said she hadn’t seen the video herself but that hearing Edmonson’s description of it, which came during a televised news conference announcing the arrests, made her feel “physically ill.”
“It has been pure hell. I can’t explain what it is like to bury your 6-year-old grandchild,” said Cathy Mardis, who was wearing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle T-shirt in memory of her grandson’s love of the cartoon characters. “You have to decide what to bury him in, whether you are going to do an open or closed casket. It was open, and you could tell there had been trauma.”
Stafford is currently being held at the Rapides Parish Jail on $1 million bail. His attorney will fight to have the bail reduced on Thursday. Greenhouse is free on $1 million bail after his family posted a property bond. He has been suspended without pay.
