Many are saying good riddance to the St. Paul, Minn., police sergeant who encouraged drivers to mow down Black Lives Matter demonstrators. After a month of resisting, he finally yielded to widespread pressure.

“SPPD announces that Jeffrey Rothecker has resigned his position with the department, effective immediately,” the St. Paul Police said, according to the New York Daily News.

The 22-year police veteran crossed a line, and later apologized, for his Facebook post, which appeared ahead of a planned BLM demonstration that blocked traffic on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

He wrote, “Run them over. Keep traffic flowing and don’t slow down for any of these idiots who try and block the street.”

Rothecker then explains to drivers how to avoid being charged for striking a demonstrator.

He deleted the post, but it was up long enough to spark outrage. Officials placed him on paid administrative leave. But the local Black Lives Matter chapter complained that his punishment was too lenient.

“These comments have been described as hateful, but … according to Minnesota statute … this is also a criminal offense that officer Rothecker has admitted to,” said Trahern Crews of Black Lives Matter St. Paul, according to TwinCities.com.

St. Paul mayor Chris Coleman said he’s pleased that Rothecker decided to turn in his badge.

“The actions Mr. Rothecker admits he engaged in were disgusting, harmful and out of step with the values of the Department and the community it serves,” he said, according to the Daily News.
