Prisoners Donate Their Wages Towards Flint Water Crisis
An unexpected group of people have stepped up to help ensure students in Flint, Michigan have clean drinking water in the midst of their ongoing water crisis. Recently, inmates and staff at Pugsley Correctional Facility challenged Oaks Correctional Facility in Michigan in a contest to collect the most water for the students at Genesee County’s Intermediate School District in Flint. In 30 days, the facilities collected a total of 29,000 bottles for the students. They also got a local grocery store involved to add to the drive. Inmates at the facility donated money, contributing approximately $600 toward the initiative — a significant offering especially considering their income. “It’s a lot of money when you’re making $1.17 a day or making $.26 an hour,” said Robert Gauthier, general office assistant at Pugsley of the inmates’ contribution. Prisoners also helped load water onto trucks to be stored in a warehouse until the bottles are sent to the schools. Huff Post
NY Hotel Illegally Advertising Rooms Via Air BnB
If you’re looking for a place to crash in New York, you may want to bypass the Imperial Court Hotel on the upper west side. The historic venue has been cited by the Mayor’s office for numerous fire safety violations because the hotel has no fire sprinklers, inadequate exits and no fire alarm system. Even still, 57 of the hotel’s 227 rooms are occupied illegally. The property’s owners, a father/son duo named Michael and Ron Edelstein, have argued with the government that their hotel has rented rooms on a short term basis since the Great Depression and they could rent to tourists because they grandfathered in under old laws which allowed it. The Edelstein’s have sought legal representation to fight the new housing laws. NY Daily News
Pop Icon In Trouble With The Law
Elton John is facing a sexual harassment suit for allegedly groping a Los Angeles police captain who once worked as an off-duty security guard for the legendary singer and pianist. The lawsuit, filed Monday by Capt. Jeffrey Wenninger alleges that the 69-year-old star fondled the security guard and continuously made sexually explicit comments. Wenninger’s lawsuit against John accuses the singer of touching him in an “unwelcome” manner over the 15 years the pair have worked together beginning in 2002. The officer said John most recently groped him while riding to an airport in late March 2014 and committed other lewd acts in April 2014. John’s lawyers maintain that the accusations are “baseless” and that the former officer is simply looking to extort the singer for his riches. CNN
GA Father Accused Of Murdering Infant
In June 2014, Ross Harris left his 22-month-old son in his car seat on a scorching hot day in June. The infant subsequently died in the car and Harris is preparing to stand trial for his son’s murder. Harris’ lawyer argue that the father did not intentionally leave his child in the car, he was simply distracted by his sexting obsession that he temporarily forgot about the baby. Harris has also been indicted on charges that he exchanged lewd photos and engaged in sexually explicit chats with underage girls. Harris’ lawyers believe prosecutors are actively trying to smear their clients perception in the media prior to jury selection for the murder trial. “Despite possessing Ross Harris’ cell phone for almost two years, the Cobb County district attorney has only now chosen to indict Ross for some alleged consensual electronic communications,” said Harris’ attorney, Maddox Kilgore in a statement. Cobb District Attorney Vic Reynolds has since replied that the timing is coincidental as to ensure that the sexual misconduct charges are tried within the statue of limitations. AJC
