Just days after it was announced that freedom fighter, abolitionist and former slave Harriet Tubman will grace the front of the $20 bill, she will now have a National Historic Park named after her too.
According to the Huffington Post, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch recently signed an agreement making land belonging to Harriet Tubman Home Inc. in Auburn, New York, to be transferred to the National Park Service. The 26-acre property will now be referred to Harriet Tubman National Historical Park.
In 1859, she moved into the Auburn house and bought 25 acres next to that property in 1896, where she opened the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged, which provided housing for African-Americans seniors, the Huff Post notes.
U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer said “we hit two grand slams for Tubman” this week. “Being on the $20 bill and now having the national park in her honor and focused on Auburn. Auburn is sort of the center of national attention today,” he told The Citizen.
U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrant called Tubman a “remarkable American hero.”
“The Harriet Tubman residence showcases the life of an icon and agent of social change who altered the face of our nation for future generations,” she said in a a statement. “This designation would be another national highlight of New York’s rich history and would strengthen our commitment to preserving our landmarks.”
Once the land agreement is finalized, a ceremony will be held in Washington D.C. to formally announce the park, the Citizen noted.
