The officer who handcuffed and arrested Barbara Dawson, the woman who died in front of Calhoun Liberty Hospital in Blountstown, Florida, has been cleared of all charges, WCTV reports.
On December 21, 2015, Dawson, 57, was escorted out of the hospital’s emergency room after she was discharged and refused to leave. Dawson complained of difficulty breathing while Blountstown Police Officer John Tadlock led her to his police car. An hour later, Dawson collapsed in the parking lot. Medical officials say she died from a blood clot in her lung.
State Attorney Glenn Hess wrote the following statement in a letter to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement on May 16:
“The State Attorney’s Office is closing this case with a finding that the actions of (Officer) John Tadlock were appropriate under the circumstances and there was no criminal law violation.”
National attention later honed in on whether the woman was mistreated in the events leading up to her death. Two nurses and a paramedic were fired as a result of the incident, the Tallahassee Democrat reports.
State law enforcement officers and the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration launched an internal investigation. AHCA fined the hospital after it found 10 deficiencies related to Dawson’s treatment and that of another patient, according to the Democrat.
