Authorities searching for a suspect with outstanding warrants at a local Charlotte apartment complex shot and killed Keith Lamont Scott, sparking protests in the community.
Authorities state they were searching for a suspect with outstanding warrants when they reportedly saw Scott leave his car with a gun, according to WCNC.
Seeing Scott as an ‘imminent threat,’ Officer Brentley Vinson fired a fatal shot.
The police statement conflicts with eyewitness reports on the scene, that claim Scott was inside of his car reading a book.
“Man was in his truck, reading a book waiting for his kid to come home,” said a source on the ground. “Cops shot him, for nothing.”
People gathered after the shooting, shouting ‘Black Lives Matter’ and ‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot.’ The situation escalated around 3am as protesters shut down Interstate 85 and started a fire on the highway, according to the local news site.
A dozen officers were injured during the demonstrations.
A woman who identified herself as Scott’s daughter, explained that Scott had a disability and was unarmed.
“The police just shot my daddy four times for being black,” the woman said.
A man who said he’s the brother of Scott said to NBC Charlotte:
“He was waiting on his son to get from school and police came out with no…he didn’t have on no uniform to determine if he was a police or not — he was an undercover and he just jumped out and yelled ‘gun’ and shot at him,” he told NBC Charlotte’s Tanya Mendis. “I think they shot him four times, I’m not sure, but he’s dead.”
This incident comes just a day after footage was released of unarmed Black man Terence Crutcher being gunned down in Tulsa, Okhlahoma by police after his car was stopped on the road.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police placed the officer involved on paid administrative leave pending investigation.
