Scores of New Yorkers took to the streets on Wednesday evening to express their discontent with Donald Trump‘s election win. Hundreds of protesters led a march from Union Square to Trump Tower. Along the way they held signs with the words “Don’t Lose Hope,” and “Trump Makes America Hate.” They also shouted things like “Not my president.” “America has not voted for Donald Trump’s policies, which don’t exist. They voted for sexism, racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, misogyny,” said one protester. “I’m concerned for the immigrants in this country, I’m concerned for the black and Muslim people,” said another. A separate protest, coordinated by the Answer Coalition, was held near the Trump Tower as well. Approximately 65 demonstrators were apprehended at Trump Tower for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Read more.
Prop 47 Plagued by Racial Bias
Research shows that racial bias is still plaguing California’s criminal justice system despite Proposition 47. In 2014, Prop 47 was enacted in efforts to reduce racial inequalities in regards to imprisonment. Several felonies related to “non-serious and non-violent property and drug crimes” were reduced to misdemeanors, which ultimately lowered the amount of time prisoners spent behind bars for committing these crimes. Although Prop 47 decreased incarceration rates, many people believe it still has racial implications, especially when it comes to those who are arrested for possession of drugs. “What we feel like is happening is that the police are charging up to avoid prop 47, because it is discretionary. Simple possession versus possession with intent is completely discretionary,” said Lynne Lyman, California State Director, Drug Policy Alliance. “Unfortunately, that discretion ends up playing out largely along race lines, where people of color get intent to sell and white people get possession.” Read more.

One of the individuals they’d like to see run is First Lady Michelle Obama. Several people took to Twitter to share that they want her to run for president during the next election. “Dear @MichelleObama, I know you wanted to be done with the White House but we’re going to need you to run for president in 4 years,” posted one user. “One good thing will come of this…in four years time Michelle Obama will be the first black female POTUS. Start visualizing now peeps!” posted another. During a sit-down at the SXSW festival earlier this year, she was asked if she would run for president and replied, “No, nope, not going to do it. You don’t have to be president of the United States to do wonderful, marvelous things.” Read more.
