The news, first reported by Axios, came as a surprise to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton. Haley informed her staff of her resignation this morning and she plans to leave the position at the end of the year.

Haley, the former governor of South Carolina was hand picked by Trump following his 2016 election win even though she initially supported Florida senator Marco Rubio in the 2016 South Carolina primary and later Ted Cruz.

Being ambassador, she said, “has been an honor of a lifetime.”

Haley was often critical of the Trump administration’s policies during her tenure as UN ambassador and in an opinion piece for the Washington Post she wrote, “I don’t agree with the president on everything. When there is disagreement, there is a right way and a wrong way to address it. I pick up the phone and call him or meet with him in person.”
