SPOKANE, Wash. — First, the Maryland Terrapins gave the underdogs reason to believe by coming out and committing sloppy turnovers. Then the Houston Cougars began to give themselves reason to believe by making the sort of plays and shots that basketball teams do when they’re about to make magic in March.

Aubrey Coleman banked in a wild 3-point shot. Adam Brown heaved in a 3-pointer from nearly half-court to beat the halftime buzzer. Kelvin Lewis made a 3, stole the ball and converted a layup in a 16-second frenzy when the Cougars began wobbling in the second half.

The Cougars mustered up enough good bounces and good play to keep their hopes stoked, but not enough to make their NCAA Tournament dreams come true. A second-half onslaught by the fourth-seeded Terrapins put an 89-77 end Friday night to the Cougars’ Dead Man Walk through March.
