Not overeating for the holidays is key and following some easy and simple rules will help you escape the traps of the holiday bulge.
1. Eat a light, healthy snack before parties
This will help you curb hunger and make better choices. It is just like going to the grocery store hungry, BAD IDEA! I have done it so many times and too many times made really poor food choices. Remember we said this journey of weight loss is all about YOUR choices.
2. Limit alcohol
Alcohol has empty calories and packs on the fat and sugar which adds to your weight gain. Most people don’t know how to have just one drink.
3. Bring a low-fat holiday dish to the party
If everyone was conscious in the food preparations, then the choices would be healthy and no one would have to feel guilty in eating
4. Keep minimal baked goods on hand this year
Narrow the choices down to a few healthy desserts and substitute certain ingredients like cane sugar vs white sugar. Use real butter instead of margarine or vegetable spreads.
5. Try to eat a large salad before most meals.
This will help you feel full and help you to eat smaller portions
6. Substitute healthful ingredients
Stevia is a great sugar substitute
7. Make a goal with a friend to lose 5 pounds or to maintain weight during the holidays.
This is a great way to buddy up and hold yourself accountable to someone. Journal your meals and choose wisely.
8. Holiday Time
Remember the holidays are truly only 3 real days (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. Kwanzaa or Chanukah are 8 days
9. Fitness Check
Sign up for a 5k or fitness walk or other great event to keep your mind focused on fitness goals.
10. Reality Check
Finally, celebrate and focus on what the holidays are really about. They are designed to spend time with family and friends and enjoy each other’s company
Eat well and have fun. Be conscious of what you are eating and use food to fuel you.
