Mariah Carey Renews Vows with Strange ‘Ring Pop’ Ring

Posted Mon May 3, 2010 11:00am PDT by Lindsay Robertson in Stop The Presses!

When Mariah Carey and her husband Nick Cannon said “I do” to each other for the third time at their Beverly Hills home on Friday, Cannon, 29, presented his wife of two years with an unusual piece of bling: a huge, diamond- and sapphire-encrusted bauble designed to look like a high-end, thoroughly inedible version of the classic children’s “ring pop” candy.

In a video touting the ring’s designer, Jason of Beverly Hills, Cannon, 29, explains that the expensive gift is also something of a joke: “This is for fun,” he tells the camera, displaying the candy-colored ring in its special box.

“This is what we do for toys. At some point you’ve gotta have a sense of humor about all of this. A sense of humor with diamonds.”

Expensive “gag” gift aside, Carey, 40, and Cannon take their vows very seriously. The two, who married in 2008 after just six weeks of dating, plan to renew their vows every year on their anniversary.

“We get married every year! That’s our thing,” Cannon told UsMagazine.com last year. After two island weddings, this year they opted for a more traditional approach at home, with Carey in a long white gown and Cannon in a matching white suit.

The ring is made of white gold, diamonds, and pink sapphires, and comes in a special box with a “spinner” so “you can see it sparkle under the lights inside,” according to Jason Arasheben, the CEO of the Jason of Beverly Hills jewelery store where Nick purchased the ring. The spinner is another feature reminiscent of ring pop candy rings, some of which had spinners.

Cannon reportedly proposed to Carey in 2008 with a real diamond hidden in a ring pop candy wrapper.
