U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee has been presented as a potential nominee for Secretary of Homeland Security after Sec. Janet Napolitano‘s resignation to lead the University of California system.

The Congressional Black Caucus sent a letter to President Barack Obama last week encouraging him to consider Jackson Lee, who has served as a congresswoman representing Houston’s 18th Congressional District since 1995.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Caucus Chairwoman Marcia Fudge wrote:

“Representative Jackson Lee would serve as an effective DHS Secretary because she understands the importance of increasing border security and maintaining homeland safety,” the letter says.

Local Republicans balked at the suggestion, taking to Facebook to sound off on the Caucus’ letter.

“Should we laugh or cry at this news?,” the Harris County Republican Party asked, quoting from Fudge’s letter.

Jackson Lee is currently a ranking member on the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security. She also formerly served as Chairwoman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection.
