12/05/13- Dear Tom,

“Mama Sue” is my mom’s nickname. She is a single mother of 4 girls and me. As long as I can remember, she has taken in several foster children and runaways.

She took them into her home and treated all of them with the same love and affection as if they were her very own. She made sure they finished high school and many of them went on to college and started families.

She has also been an inspiration, counselor and provider for so many people, offering hot meals and a place to stay for folks who were down on their luck, laid off from their jobs or evicted from their homes.

You can see my mom’s heart smiling when she does this. Her greatest love is her family, friends and cooking on Sundays after church. Everyone comes over – and the kids love hanging out in the basement. I know I did!

A while back ago, a pipe burst in the basement, flooding it and all the den furniture, the rug and the television. Her homeowner’s insurance didn’t cover her loss. In fact, they cancelled her policy!

She went and paid for the water damage repairs out of her own pocket and with Christmas on the way, she wants to finish re-doing it with some new furniture and a new TV set that would allow her to continue to share her basement with others whose lives she has yet to touch. Can you help a mother out?

Sincerely,

James Thomas
