May is National Bike Month and the City of Houston is celebrating. The City and Bike Houston are hosting a Bike to Work Day event with a celebratory bike ride. The ride will start at City Hall in Hermann Square at 7:30 AM and showcase a variety of bicycle facilities.

  • Washington Avenue (shared lane marking),
  • Houston Avenue (Proposed Bicycle Facility),
  • Spring Street (shared-use trail),
  • Heights Hike and Bike Trail (off-street trail) and
  • Lamar Street (City’s first two-way, separated Cycle Track)

This celebratory ride will be joined by ride trains coming from the Heights, Midtown/Montrose, Museum District/West University, and the East Side, all converging on Hermann Square for food, music, and events.

Registration for Bike to Work Day opens at 7:00 a.m. Ride-out is at 7:30 a.m. from Hermann Square for a 4-mile loop ride followed by free breakfast, music and events at 8:00 a.m. with Mayor Sylvester Turner at Hermann Square.

Event sponsors include BikeHouston, METRO, B-cycle, Bike Barn, Houston Dynamo, Corner Bakery, Shipley Do-nuts, the YMCA, American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure Houston and Whole Foods.

Houstonians can sign up to participate at http://www.houstonbikeways.org. No bike of your own? No problem! Check out a bike from any B-cycle bike station located near City Hall.

Houston is making great strides in planning for and providing new facilities for bicyclists and pedestrians, such as the Bayou Greenways Initiative, currently under construction, and the recently released draft Houston Bike Plan, which provides a vision for biking in Houston and identifies future projects to create a high-comfort, low-stress citywide bicycle network in the next 10 years.
