(Houston, TX) — A federal judge gives Harris County the OK to go after big paper manufacturing companies in court.

Harris County attorney Vince Ryan says International Paper and Waste Management tried to stall the lawsuit by moving it to federal court, but a judge bounced it back to district court.   Ryan accuses the companies of dumping cancer-causing dioxins into parts of the San Jacinto River for decades.

“Dioxin is the most toxic chemical made by man”

Attorney Rock Owens says the county wants a billion dollars in fines, because the companies have done little to fix the problem, and dioxin continues to leak.

“The companies dumped this stuff there in the 60′s and ran off and left it and tried to hide it and its continued to pollute the fish, the crabs, oysters, the whole bay and the river”

Trial is set for January 9th.
